The Consumer Product Safety Commission [“CPSC”] is the federal agency responsible for enforcing toy safety in the United States. The CPSC regularly issues notifications regarding dangerous toys that should be immediately taken out of your home. The following 10 toys are those that the CPSC currently considers the most serious safety threats to your child:
- The Auto Fire Toy Dart Gun from Family Dollar Stores: This toy, sold exclusively in the Dollar Store chain, caused the asphyxiation deaths of a 9-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy. The suction cups on the darts became stuck in children’s throats, causing them to stop breathing. The toy dart gun playsets come with orange and yellow and a blue and yellow gun.
- Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. magnetic toys from Mega Brands: Both of these toys have small magnets that can detach from the toy, posing an injury risk in the event the magnets are ingested or inhaled. So far, the CPSC has received 19 reports of problems with the magnets on these toys.
- MagnaMan Magnetic Action Figures from Mega Brands: These toys have a similar issue with small magnets. So far, the CPSC has received 25 reports of the small magnets detaching from the action figures, although no injuries have been reported.
- Tool Bench Toy from Playskool: The deaths of two toddlers occurred after plastic nails that are part of this toy became lodged in their throats. Playskool announced a voluntary recall following those deaths and parents who return the nails are eligible for a $50 merchandise certificate that may be used for a replacement toy.
- Tiny Love Wind Chime Toys: Tiny Love has recalled these toys because they can come apart, revealing sharp metal rods that could cause cuts or puncture injuries.
- Tiny Tink and Friends Children’s Toy Jewelry Sets: A metal connector that holds the charm contained in Tinker Bell’s Lil’ Tinker Bracelet has been recalled because the toy has an unsafe level of lead.
- Action Team Playset: The death of an 8-year-old Texas child prompted OKK Trading to recall this toy gun set, which contains three soft, rubber darts as well as a walkie-talkie, whistle, badge and a baton.
- Target Dive Toys for Swimming Pools: These toys were recalled because the dive sticks can remain upright under water, posing the risk of impalement for children.
- NERF Blaster Toy Guns: These guns were recalled because the gun’s plunger can pull the user’s skin when the toy is fired, resulting in an injury to the face, neck or chest. Hasbro is offering a free repair kit to parents that addresses the issue.
- Little Tikes Toy Workshop Sets: Several varieties of the Little Tikes Workshop Set contain red and blue plastic nails that can become caught in a child’s throat, posing a choking hazard.
