Steps Parents Can Take to Get Dangerous Toys Recalled

Most people become familiar with dangerous toys after the Consumer Products Safety Commission issues a recall or advisory about a particular item. What many parents don’t realize is that you can play a key role in making recalls happen.

Each year, the CPSC receives some 10,000 reports about dangerous toys – many of which are directly responsible for getting a faulty, poisonous or dangerous toy removed from the shelves. Not only does reporting dangerous toys help prevent further injuries or incidents, but recalls also mean toy manufacturers are responsible for the negative consequences of any injuries or deaths caused by their toys.

The first step to getting a toy recalled is do fill out an incident report with the CPSC, which can be done online at http://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx. It’s very important to remember that incident reports don’t have to follow an injury or death. All that’s needed is a specific danger that’s associated with a particular toy.

Once you submit an incident report, the CPSC  will contact the manufacturer about your complaint and determine whether further action is necessary. If it chooses to investigate your issue, the CPSC will notify you by mail, e-mail or phone. It’s important to remember that your name will not be shared with the manufacturer unless you specifically give the CPSC permission to do so when you initially file your incident report.

If you find out that you have a recalled toy at home, it’s important to follow news of any offer to refund or replace a toy to make sure you take advantage of all the benefits a recall offers.
