OKK Toy Racing Car Recall

Toy racing cars manufactured by OKK Trading Inc., of Commerce, California were recalled on January 23, 2008. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the Chinese-made OKK Trading toy racing cars are made with surface paint that contains excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard. If ingested, lead paint can cause serious injuries to children.

According to the CPSC, OKK Trading Inc. recalled about 2000 lead-tainted toy racing cars that are operated with a remote control. The OKK Trading toy racing car comes with four additional tires and one remote control. “Formula 1” is printed on the packaging. The toy racing cars were sold at dollar and discount stores nationwide between October and November 2007 for about $1.00 each.

The contaminated OKK Trading toy racing cars should be taken away from children immediately and returned to the store of purchase for a full refund. Consumers can obtain additional information on the toy racing car recall by contacting OKK trading at (877) 655-8697 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.okktrading.com.

Lead Poisoning Injuries

Lead exposure is especially dangerous for children under 6 because they are still growing, and their brains are developing.  Small children often put toys in their mouths, and sometimes inadvertently eat paint chips.  If lead is ingested, it can cause behavioral problems, learning disabilities, seizures and even death.

The symptoms of lead poisoning often mimic other illnesses.  They include irritability; loss of appetite; weight loss; sluggishness; abdominal pain; vomiting; constipation and pallor from anemia.  There are often no signs that a child has been exposed to lead, and a blood test is the only way to determine if someone is suffering from lead poisoning.  Mild cases of lead poisoning are treated by ending the lead exposure and having the patient submit to follow-up blood tests.  A treatment called Chelation Therapy is used when children test positive for high levels of lead in their blood.
